New sewage plant to start operation in December

NOIDA: Following positive results during the trial run of the new sewage treatment plant (STP) in Sector 168, Noida Authority is set to commission its full-fledged operations in December. The 50MLD plant has been built for treating sewage generated from 91 sectors, several of which are along Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and yet to be fully developed.

Trial runs of the plant had been temporarily suspended for a month during the monsoon when outlets of the STP were clogged due to reverse flooding from the Yamuna waters. It took UP irrigation department a month to mitigate the after-effects of the floods.

Officials added that equipment at the STP have been found fully functional during tests. Parameters related to effluent quality, like levels of chemical oxygen demand and biological oxygen demand, have also been found to be within check. The plant has been built to treat sewage using the advanced SBR technology.

"The plant is largely a part of infrastructure works being built for newly-developed sectors. The capacity of the plant would be further enhanced as sectors start getting populated," said Samakant Srivastava, PE (Outer), Noida Authority.

The cumulative sewage treating capacity of Noida - with STPs in Sectors 50, 54, 91 and 123 - is 168MLD at present. The new plant will take total sewage treatment capacity of the city to 218MLD even as sewage generation remains slightly above the 150MLD mark.
