JNNURM grant of Rs 26.83cr for Mapusa

MAPUSA: Development of Mapusa city will get a boost as the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) will receive funds in a fortnight under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) aimed at improving infrastructure, transport, drainage and roads, etc.

"We have already received the state government's approval, the central government has also approved 26.83 crore fund under the JNNURM scheme," said MMC chairperson Sudhir Kandolkar. "The municipality is likely to receive the fund in a fortnight," he added. The council sent the proposal to the state government after the council meeting decided on various projects for the development of Mapusa.

"The spending will focus on Mapusa's development. Projects like construction of new roads, gutters, footpaths, road-widening wherever possible will be undertaken to utilize the funds," Kandolkar said.

JNNURM is a massive city-modernization scheme launched by the government of India under the ministry of urban development. It is a unique project dedicated to the redevelopment of India's cities, as India has traditionally focused on development of rural areas. Project could be taken up and funded like water supply, storm drains, widening and strengthening road network, solid waste management, etc.
