Perambur flyover may be ready by December

CHENNAI: Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin on Friday said that encroachments that impeded the smooth flow of traffic from the Perambur flyover would be removed in a phased manner after the facility was opened.

Speaking to mediapersons after inspecting the construction work of the flyover, he said that it was expected to be opened to traffic by December, two months ahead of schedule. Necessary permissions had been obtained from the Railways for taking up work over the portion belonging to it, he added.

Mr. Stalin also discussed the project details with Mayor M. Subramanian, Chennai Metrowater Managing Director Shiv Das Meena, Secretary to the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply Niranjan Mardi and Chennai Corporation Commissioner (in-charge) Ashish Chatterjee.

The Mayor said that after the inauguration of the flyover, foot overbridges would be constructed if required by the pedestrians. “We will discuss it with the traffic police and take a decision.”

A senior official of the Chennai Corporation explained that the flyover would be 1.12-km-long. It would be 13 metres in height at its highest point as it would go over the existing railway track there. Tank Bund Road and Paper Mills Road would become one-ways after the flyover was opened to traffic.

Certain portions of North Perambur High Road have been widened to facilitate easy traffic flow. Ten decks and 29 footings have been completed so far. The existing subway beneath the flyover would remain open and for use of two and three wheelers. Two parks would come up on the open space beneath the flyover, the official explained.

Corporation’s health centre nears completion

Positive step: The construction of a health centre at Karungalpatti in Salem is nearing completion.

SALEM: The construction of a new building for the Salem Corporation’s health centre at Karungalpatti is nearing completion.

The civic body has taken up the works at Rs. 24.5 lakh under its comprehensive plan to revamp the urban health posts, maternity and child health centres, sub-centres, dispensaries and other health facilities. A sum of Rs. 12 lakh was allotted to create additional facilities including a compound wall.

The new building has labour room, out-patient room, drug store, waiting hall and residential quarters for health personnel. The centre caters to a population of about 15,000, a majority of them belong to the families living below the poverty line. Besides maternity care, childcare and immunisation programmes are also being carried out in the area from the centre. A large number of people visit the centre, as treatment at private clinics is costly.

The existing building of the centre has only one hall and it lacks equipment to deliver proper service to the residents.

Corporation officials said that they would equip the centre with modern facilities after completing the construction of the new building. New equipment and furniture would be provided to the centre. The Corporation was also planning to improve the facilities in health centres located in other parts in a phased manner. These centres did not witness any significant improvement even after several years of Salem city being given the Corporation status.

Avadi Municipality upgrading health posts

CHENNAI: Avadi Municipality has started upgrading the infrastructure of its health posts.

A senior municipal official said three of the five health posts are being improved at a total cost of Rs.21 lakh. On an average, about 500 patients visited these facilities every day. Besides treatment for common ailments, they also provide maternity care.

About 40 per cent of the work to construct a new building for the Paruthipattu health post has been completed. The facility being built at a cost of Rs.8 lakh would be ready to use in two months.

The health post at Thirumullaivoyal, which is dilapidated, would be demolished to accommodate a new structure. The centre is now functioning on rented premises. More facilities such as equipment and additional rooms would be provided at the Mitnamalli health centre that is running out of space.

About Rs.5 lakh has been allocated towards the work that would get over in six months, the official said.

Nearly Rs.18 lakh has been spent on providing facelift to similar centres at Thandurai and Vizhignampakkam. Besides improving facilities at operation theatre in Vizhignampakkam health post, more amenities have been added at the AIDS counselling centre.

“We plan to computerise the network in all five health posts. One health post caters for residents living in areas in 5-to-8 km radius,” the official said.
