Rs. 61.50 lakh for providing amenities

ARIYALUR: Varadarajanpettai town panchayat in the district has been chosen for implementing the ‘Anaithu Peruratchi Anna Marumalarchi Thittam at an expenditure of Rs. 61.50 lakh during 2009-10.

Making this announcement at a review meeting on Monday, the District Collector, Anil Meshram, said that works on construction of roads with storm water drainage, erecting Compact Fluorescent Lamps, digging of borewells, desilting of tanks, laying cement roads, and creating bus shelters would be undertaken in the town panchayat under the scheme.

Further, priority would be accorded for the town panchayat as regards works undertaken by various departments and in allocation of funds for improving the basic amenities. Buildings would be constructed with PWD funds and medical camps would be organised by the Health department. Likewise, new schools would be started through the Education department, the Collector said, adding that the libraries, sports and recreation facilities, drinking water facilities would also be provided.

Senior officials including the Project Director of District Rural Development Agency R. Venkatachalam and Assistant Director – Panchayats, Tiruvengadam took part in the meeting.

Earlier, during the weekly grievance redressal session, members of the public handed over 209 petitions to the Collector. Most of them pertained to requests for relief for disabled, patta conversion, old age pension. The Collector directed officials concerned to act promptly on the petitions.

Corporation to gift gold rings to babies who are given Tamil names

CHENNAI: Chennai Corporation on Tuesday announced that it will give one-gram gold ring each to babies born in Corporation maternity hospitals if they are given Tamil names.

Addressing presspersons, Mayor M. Subramanian said, “The scheme would come into force at 6 a.m. on Wednesday and was being launched to mark the birthday of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.”

The scheme figured in the civic body’s 2009-2010 budget as a measure to encourage people to give Tamil names to their babies.

A panel of experts in Tamil would be formed to decide on the names eligible for the gold rings, said Mr. Subramanian. It would meet every 15 days and declare the names eligible. The distribution of gold rings would be carried out by the officials of the civic body every 15 days, said Mr. Subramanian. The officials will be given material on Tamil names.

Mr. Subramanian said that many of the people whose mother tongue is Tamil were reluctant to have Tamil names for their children. But people who speak other languages were keen to have names in their own mother tongues, he said.

The Corporation has taken measures to issue birth certificates free of cost within 24 hours of birth of a baby, the Mayor said.

Maternity hospitals run by the civic body have been modernised and they provide free services to the weaker sections, he added.

Disposable maternity kits would be provided to maternity hospitals. Around 15,000 babies are born in Corporation maternity hospitals every year, said Mr. Subramanian.

A total of 11,367 babies have been given gift packs under a scheme announced last September.

SALEM: Salem Corporation has begun removing silt from the bed of Vellakuttai Odai here on Monday.

This comes in the wake of complaints from people that the flow of waste water in the channel remains affected and sewage overflows during rain.

A number of colonies located near the channel were flooded during the recent rain.

The channel, a surplus course of the Vellakuttai Eri and a major sewer that passes through several residential colonies before joining the Tirumanimutharu River accumulated silt due to the unmindful dumping of solid waste by commercial establishments.

Eateries and shopkeepers continue to dispose of garbage in the channel despite warnings from the Corporation.

Civic officials have also failed to take concrete measures to prevent commercial establishments from dumping solid waste.

With the city witnessing heavy rain for the past few days, sewage mixed with rainwater is flowing to the rim of the channel.

Civic officials deployed earth movers and a team of workers to remove the silt and ensure smooth flow of waste water in the channel.

Officials said that a portion of the channel had already been taken up for improvement as a part of the second phase of the Tirumanimutharu River Project.

The entire course of the channel would be improved in a phased manner.

This is expected to help ensure smooth flow of waste water.
