Proposal to restore 73 toilets in public places and Corpn. schools

To prevent open defecation and to ensure sanitation

To prevent open defecation, the City Municipal Corporation has proposed to carryout restoration works of 73 toilets in public places and corporation schools at a cost of Rs. 201.32 lakh.

No maintenance

The civic body had constructed over 225 toilets for public use in all the four wards. But due to poor quality of construction materials and lack of maintenance, the toilets became barely usable and residents in the area were forced to depend on toilets in nearby areas.

This paved way for open defecation that led to sanitation issue. Hence to ensure sanitation and encourage healthy habits among residents, the Corporation has planned to restore as many as 23 existing toilets would be renovated in Suramangalam Zone at a total cost of Rs. 73.32 lakh, 12 toilets in Hasthampatti Zone at a cost of Rs. 30.05 lakh, 28 toilets in Ammapet Zone at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh and 10 toilets at a cost of Rs. 17.95 lakh in Kondalampatti Zone.

Engineers told The Hindu that cost of repair work for each toilet depends on the level of damage to pipelines, flooring and the building. “A proposal has been prepared for each toilet”, they added. The Corporation has decided to seek allocation from the government for carrying out the restoration work. A resolution to this effect was passed at the council meeting held recently.

Ambur municipality creates awareness on dengue prevention

2,000 students take part in rally flagged off by K.C. Veeramani

The Ambur Municipality has been taking measures to control mosquito breeding and create awareness among public on dengue prevention.

On Saturday, the municipality conducted an awareness rally to take forward awareness on dengue prevention, eradicate plastic use and improve sanitation in the municipal limits. Close to 2,000 students took part in the rally. School Education Minister K.C. Veeramani flagged it off.

An exhibition on destroying larva in water sources, common breeding sources of mosquitoes such as discarded coconut shells and reduced use of plastic was organised on the occasion.

The municipality’s chairperson Sangeetha Balasubramani said they have been taking up various mosquito control measures for the last two months. “We have taken up anti-larval measures in the municipality wards. Fogging is also being carried out,” she said.

The local body had also distributed “nilavembu kudineer” as a preventive measure for dengue to students of eight government and private schools and public last week.

“We obtained the kudineer from the Deputy Director of Health Services office, Tirupattur, and distributed the same. Councillors were also asked to inform the residents of their wards on the availability of the kudineer outside these schools. We are planning to continue to distribute it this week too,” she added. She said that public have also requested the local body to distribute “nilavembu kudineer” in every ward.

Stop slaughter of animals on roadsides

A resident of Chengalpatti Street in Ward 56 has petitioned the Corporation Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj asking him to stop wayside slaughtering of animals. Mr. K. Gangadharan, in his petition, said that cattle were slaughtered on the road, and the waste materials were dumped on drainages.

He said that over 2,000 students pursue their education in the school in the area, and they were the most affected. He said that the recent Government Letter No. 24501 dated June 30, 2014 from Meenakshi Rajagopal, Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (Training) and Director of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Chennai, to all District Collectors called for ensuring proper disposal of solid and liquid wastes by slaughtering houses.

The letter said that places near temples, and public roads were used for slaughtering animals. The letter asked Collectors to prepare a list of all slaughtering places located within village panchayats in order to ensure they got license.
