Monitor women’s welfare schemes: Isaac

Business aid: Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac inaugurating a scheme launched by the city Corporation for distribution of subsidy for women entrepreneurs on Monday.

Thiruvananthapuram: Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac has called on local self-government institutions to establish a mechanism to monitor the utilisation of funds for welfare schemes targeting women.

The Minister was inaugurating a function organised by the city Corporation here on Monday to distribute subsidy to women entrepreneurs.

Brand building

Dr. Isaac stressed the need to ensure proper utilisation of funds distributed to women’s self-help groups (SHGs).

He urged the SHGs to focus on brand building and identifying markets for their products.

He reminded local bodies of their role in helping women entrepreneurs to resolve their problems.

Mayor C. Jayan Babu presided over the function. Deputy Mayor V. Jayaprakash, Welfare standing committee chairman S.A. Sundar, ward councillors and corporation officials participated in the function.

Rs.1.25 crore

The subsidy scheme of the corporation falls under the People’s Plan Campaign. An amount of Rs.1.25 crore has been earmarked for disbursement to women entrepreneurs during the current year.

As many as 197 self-help groups are expected to benefit from the scheme.
