The Makineni Basava Punnaiah mini stadium in Singhnagar bustled with activity on Sunday. A steady stream of people poured in from all directions to be part of the International Women's Day celebrations organised on a grand scale by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation.

The corporation doled out aid, in cash and other forms of assistance worth Rs. 15.51 crore to a total number of 10,970 beneficiaries under various welfare schemes.

Minister for Secondary Education Kolusu Parthasaradhy utilised the occasion to assert the Congress Government's stand on the issue of woman welfare. He said allegations surfacing from certain quarters that the State was trying to dilute the welfare schemes introduced by the former chief minister, the late Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, were baseless. Reiterating that the ultimate aim of the Congress Government was to empower women in all spheres, he sought to substantiate the claim by pointing to the fact that the Rs. 215 crore released for self-help groups in 2008-09 under the paavala vaddi scheme had been enhanced to Rs. 450 crore this year. Stating that the Krishna district alone had bagged funds to the tune of Rs. 18.5 crore, the Minister said the Congress under able leadership of Sonia Gandhi at the Centre would always give priority to welfare of the masses.

Mr. Parthasaradhy also complimented the corporation authorities for making apt use of the occasion of Women's Day.

Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu said it was the right occasion to pay glowing tributes to the former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy who had introduced a slue of welfare schemes for women. He said the fact that the country had a woman President and the State had a woman Home Minister and a number of others occupying key posts in different walks of life, only goes to prove that women empowerment was among top priorities of the ruling parties.

The corporation also felicitated 25 women from various walks of life for their achievement in their respective fields.

Later, certificates of placement linked training programmes were given to 500 self-help group members, besides release of funds for beneficiaries of

Swarna Jayanthi Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY), Deepam scheme, Indira Kranthi Padhakam, Dwcra group members and street hawkers of Besant Road.

Municipal Commissioner G. Ravibabu, former Mayors M.V. Ratna Bindu, Tadi Sakuntala and Mallika Begum and others were on the dais.

50% quota for women in local bodies in Maharashtra

    Staff Reporter

In a move that would increase women's representation in politics, the Maharashtra Cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod to increase women's reservation in local body polls from 33 to 50 per cent.

The decision comes a day after Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said a bill proposing 50 per cent women's quota in local bodies would be introduced in the coming budget session of the legislature on March 14.

Between November 2011 and February 2012, 27 zilla parishads, 14 corporations, including the high profile Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, and over 500 local bodies are going to the polls.

The Nationalist Congress Party, which had earlier called for increasing the quota to 50 per cent, welcomed the decision.

BPO training empowers a helpless woman

    G. Ravikiran

    K. Dhanya Lakshmi, 27, lost all hopes of standing on her own feet after her husband's death, but a three-month-long training course in BPO jobs has changed her life altogether. She is now happy working as a customer relations officer drawing about Rs. 7,000 a month.

Dhanya Lakshmi, who hails from Pedana in Krishna district, was lucky to get this chance as she fully utilised the opportunity that came to her in the form of a training centre opened at Pedana under the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) of Indira Kranthi Patham (IKP).

Many such disadvantaged but educated youths have got a lifetime opportunity through the training centres opened by Trimentus Technologies, Chennai, in partnership with the MEPMA project. The agencies are mobilising interested educated youths in municipal areas and identifying serious candidates with 95 per attendance and above for further training for a fulltime career.

    P. Venkata Kiran Kumar, centre head, Trimentus, says training centres have been opened at Pedana, Machilipatnam, Nuzvid and Gudivada with Vijayawada as the district centre. Training is being given in soft skills and computer programming, depending on the aptitude of the candidates.

Last year 350 candidates were trained and the number has increased to 1,400 this year.

Mr. Kiran Kumar says that some students are being absorbed in the company itself if they could show excellence and diligence during the training period. P. Jyotsna Rani initially enrolled for training and later showed interest in graphic designing. As she showed promise of a good career, she was taken as an administrator at Trimentus itself.

    High motivation

For the candidates to achieve success under the MEPMA training programmes, they should have to show total interest and ensure attendance of above 95 per cent. The level of dedication among the candidates would be examined and then they would be selected for full time training. The project aims at preparing the youngsters to seize good jobs as more jobs in BPO and software sectors are expected to open up in the next few years.
