In a swift move, the Telangana government razed down more than 200 illegal structures on a single day on Tuesday in various parts of the Greater Hyderabad region.

The Telangana government, which had promised to act severely on encroachments and illegal constructions on nullahs and lakes, sent squads comprising municipal, revenue, police and other department officials to remove structures in all the 24 circles under the control of the civic body. In two days, the number of illegal structures demolished crossed 240.

In some areas like Gachibowli, Banjara Hills, Malkajgiri, Ashok Nagar, Yellareddyguda, Balanagar and Kapra, residential and commercial structures built on nullahs were demolished. In Deepti Sri Nagar in Nizampet, which was flooded in recent rains, four buildings were brought down.

The squads also pulled down unauthorised floors and buildings. Pillars and floors were broken down in Somajiguda, Kawadiguda, LB Nagar and other areas. A number of dilapidated structures were also bulldozed. The squads were instructed to initially go after illegal structures that were commercial with no court order in their favour.

Some residents tried but failed to prevent the authorities from carrying out the demolitions. Property owners argued that the drive was illegal as they were not given prior notice.

Responding to the State government’s call for information on illegal constructions, 118 complaints were received on the GHMC helpline.

The government has kept 3,639 houses ready for BPL families who will be affected in the drive. These houses, located on the city outskirts in Qutbullapur, Shamshabad and Bandlaguda, were built under the JNNURM housing scheme. GHMC officials also conducted a check on 379 hotels and slapped Rs 1.4 lakh in penalties for offences such as illegal dumping of waste.

NMC anti-encroachment squad stops short of main culprits

NAGPUR: The anti-encroachment drive of Nagpur Municipal Corporation on North Ambazari road on Tuesday has come under scanner for its tokenism after the squad seized a few soft toys and four push carts but stopped short of removing the bulk of encroachments on footpaths at the busy Rani Jhansi Square.

On Tuesday, an anti-encroachment squad led by NMC official Arun Pipurde reached the University Library Square. It first targeted a roadside vendor selling soft toys at the square and seized some of his ware. Later, they headed towards Rani Jhansi Square. On way, they seized four empty push carts but they stopped short of vendors doing brisk business outside Matru Seva Sangh. They remained untouched by the squad.

The drive that started at 2.30 pm was an eyewash. The vendors who ran away from the spot when the squad started its work were back on the street within no time. Pankaj (name changed), one of the street vendors selling garments on the streets for the past 12 years, said, "The authorities seized kiosks of a few vendors. But we are back running our business again."

Pandurang Ghatole, a student, who travels daily on the road, said: "Accidents are on the rise here as the vendors block the pavement and autos are parked on the side of the street leading to traffic jams. Buses stop in the middle of the street and we become prone to accidents and injuries." Suresh Kunwane, a pedestrian who uses the road daily, said, "Pedestrians face a lot of difficulty because of these vendors but nothing can be done."

Though there is a traffic constable at the square almost all the time, city buses stop anywhere including in the middle of the street putting busy traffic on hold. The cops never act them either. There are a lot of pedestrians on the street everyday because of the bus stop and small accidents occur everyday, road-users said

Dilip Jamgade, executive engineer (NMC) and in-charge of anti-encroachment squad, refused to comment stating he was not present during the drive. Pipurde said: "It is not possible to take action against all illegal vendors in two-three hours, we seized a few push carts of vendors who were disturbing the commuters. We seized six-seven stalls from Sitabuldi area as well."

GHMC’s demolition drive in Old City draws traders’ ire

HYDERABAD: Traders on Tuesday objected to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation's demolition drive along the Kali Kaman - Gulzar Houz stretch for road widening.

GHMC officials told TOI that the corporation was unable to proceed with demolition of eight properties belonging to the same person since 2005 on account of court cases. However, with the cases being settled and cheques being handed over as compensation for land acquisition, the GHMC was now able to go ahead with the demolition for road widening.

No sooner than the corporation began the demolition, mild tension prevailed. Businessmen, who are tenants in the affected properties, raised a hue and cry. They claimed that the GHMC had not given them adequate time to vacate their places of business.

"If is festival season. Business will be severely affected if we are asked to vacate immediately," a trader said.

However, GHMC officials said that the traders were aware of the proceeding of the court with respect to the acquisition of properties.

"We explained to them that demolition will happen as scheduled as compensation was handed over," said GHMC section officer Mehdi Ali, who was supervising the demolition.
