Eight buildings razed in Raichur

The district administration and the Public Works Department demolished eight buildings and a few compound walls near RTO Circle and Station Circle here on Wednesday.

The officials chose to carry out the operation in the early hours of the day anticipating possible resistance from property owners. However, the police were present when the drive was carried out.

Meanwhile, some people at RTO Circle who claimed to be owners of the structures tried to convince the officials not to go ahead with the demolitions.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee member Yankanna Yadav told the officials that one of the properties belonged to his relative and the case was in court.

However, Assistant Commissioner Manjushri, who supervised the drive, did not heed his plea.

Property owners at Station Circle urged the officials to give them a day to vacate the place and their request was granted. The structures were obstructing the construction of a four-lane road from the office of the Superintendent of Police to the RTO Circle. The four-lane road, being constructed at a cost of Rs. 36 crore, was almost completed except in areas where the demolished structures once stood. There were hotels and small shops in these commercial buildings.

NMC to make city encroachment-free

NASHIK: The civic body's anti-encroachment department ramped up its drive to rid the city of its illegal structures a day after MNS chief Raj Thackeray's visit on Monday.

Officials had, of late, been laid back about the drive due to the rains, and have now said it will continue till the city is made free of all encroachments.

"We will first concentrate on all movable encroachments such as road side stalls put up by street vendors and hawkers," said an official. He said the department was also cracking down on illegal constructions.

Deputy municipal commissioner Dattatreya Gotise, who was till recently in charge of the anti-encroachment department, and under whose direction the drive began, said, "The roads will be cleared division-wise and the cycle will be repeated until all the encroachments are cleared. Already, the obstructions on the roads have been reduced considerably - particularly on the Main Road and the old city areas, where the difference is striking when compared to how clogged the streets were before. All divisional officers have been given instructions about carrying out the drive."

Gotise said most of the encroachments were cleared from the Main Road, M G Road, Raviwar Karanja, Shalimar and Shivaji Road. "Five handcarts, three small carts and items such as belts, nets, steel and wooden platforms; clothes, cutlery and stationary were confiscated," he said.

The town planning department has also sent files regarding illegal constructions to the anti-encroachment department officials, who said action against them will be taken soon.
