MMC seizes goods worth Rs 60K from New Market

MARGAO: Continuing their anti encroachment drives throughout the city, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) carried out yet another anti-encroachment drive in the New Market area, Margao, and confiscated goods worth 60,000 on Monday.

Acting upon the instructions issued by MMC chairperson Arthur D'Silva, the MMC workers led by market inspector Mohan Arlekar cleared encroachments on public spaces and footpaths in a surprise raid in the morning between gates three and four of the New Market area, Sadekar lane and Ropa chawl.

D'Silva said that the shortage of manpower prevented the MMC from carrying out planned works effectively, including such enrcoarchment drives. He added that they had already written to the directorate of municpal administration (DMA) requesting more labour workers to be sanctioned to the MMC.

Most of the confiscated goods during the drive were those belonging to shop owners in the market, who had displayed the said goods outside the shop premises. The MMC workers picked up anything that was lying outside these shop premises, backpacks, umbrellas, footwear, readymade garments and other such goods.

"We found a lot of encroachments along the footpaths which were blocking access for pedestrians ad this will be a continuous process in the days to come," said Arlekar.

Encroachments on Chhavni road to get cleared

INDORE: Taking a step towards reducing the traffic load on BRTS corridor, widening work of Chhavni road is going to start from Tuesday with removal of some of the encroachments. It was decided in a joint meeting of Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and district administration on Monday.

Road from Chhavni Crossing on BRTS to Jagannath Dharamshala is going to be widened up to 60 feet.

IMC commissioner Rakesh Singh told TOI that certain encroachments which are on the road will be removed on Tuesday, followed by removal of constructions. Civic body will then work on a comprehensive plan for widening of road and development of parking space in the area. Second phase of removal will be carried out after a week or so.

Efforts are also being taken to develop a parking space at Haat Maidan under Jagannath Bridge and renovate primary school of the area, he added.

No more eyewash, say residents

Kochi: The decision of the Fort Kochi Heritage Conserva-tion Society to evict unauthorised traders from the heritage area at Fort Kochi may just be an eyewash, allege local residents.

This is not the first attempt to clean up the heritage spot. All earlier efforts of the district administration and City Corporation to evict encroachers have failed. Shops mushroom soon after the authorities leave the place after clearing. According to civic experts, strict monitoring is needed to find a permanent solution to encroachments at Fort Kochi.

“Eviction of encroachers will not be successful without a proper monitoring mechanism. People’s representatives and police authorities should keep a vigil to prevent further encroachment. Residents can’t be blamed for their apprehension on the efficacy of the eviction,” said K.J Sohan, corporation town planning committee chairman.

The Society recently decided to remove all makeshift shops in the heritage area and a sub collector was assigned as the nodal officer for heritage zone conservation. Notices have been issued to all traders to vacate the area within 15 days.

“It has been decided that if any trader erects makeshift shops after the area is cleared, it will be soon demolished by the police with the support of the district administration. A criminal case will be registered against those who violate the instruction,” said a Society member.

There are allegations from various corners that the traders are coming back soon after the drive with the support of political parties. Though the corporation had relocated the vendors to the shops built by the Tourism Department in a nearby place, more people have set up stalls near the beach. The vendors have put up stalls even on parking lots in front of the corporation’s zonal office.
