In what is seen as the first step towards holding the much-delayed elections to the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, the State government has issued a GO fixing the number of wards at 81.

GO issued

The GO issued on Wednesday by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department takes the population of GVMC according to 2011 census and those of Anakapalle, Bheemunipatnam and five gram panchayats merged in GVMC together for fixing the wards at 81. GVMC presently comprises 72 wards.

As per 2011 census, the population of GVMC is 17,30,320, Anakapalle 86,612, Bheemunipatnam 54,865 and five gram panchayats 9,889 taking the total to 18,81,686.

Based on a proposal submitted by the Commissioner, GVMC, the GO fixes 63 wards for the first 10,00,000 population and 18 for the remaining at the rate of 50,000 for each ward.

“With the GO issued, wards have to be formed by considering the natural and geographical boundaries,” said sources in GVMC.

“Further instructions will come from the Director (Municipal Administration) based on which we will go ahead,” Municipal Commissioner M Hari Narayanan said.

However, the fixing of boundaries by following the due process after the government issues orders will take a few months. After that reservation of wards has to be done. All this will take a few months of time, says former MLA Tyanala Vijaya Kumar who was a corporator before being elected to the Assembly.

Elections were last held in 2007 after forming GVMC merging the outskirts and taking the number of wards from 50 to 72.

In July 2013, the government issued orders merging Anakapalle, Bheemunipatnam and the 10 gram panchayats in GVMC.

Cases filed in High Court opposing the merger of Bheemunipatnam are still pending. However, elections were held to the five panchayats in Bheemili mandal following a court order.

DDA to float tenders for 3 smart cities

NEW DELHI: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will float the tenders for developing three integrated sub-cities in Dwarka, Narela and Rohini next month and the work for Yamuna river front development will start by October 2.

The housing and urban affairs (HUA) ministry set these timeslines for DDA on Friday. It was also decided that all the three sub-cities will have the features of smart cities including round the clock water and electricity supply, 100% treatment of both solid and liquid waste, rainwater harvesting and smart lighting, to name a few. These sub-cities would be developed better than any city developed by private players in the National Capital Region, sources said.

He added that the developers will be selected by October. The decisions were taken at a meeting chaired by HUA secretary Durga Shanker Mishra and DDA vice-chairman Uday Pratap Singh besides other senior officials.

DDA has assured the ministry to start Yamuna bank development works over 500 acres along Old Railway Bridge-ITO barrage stretch October 2. MUMBAI: The Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar of the Shiv Sena said on Friday that the party would not allow any kind of open space reservation change in the draft Development Plan (DP) 2034 following the directives of the party president Uddhav Thackeray.

Over a year after it was released by the BMC, the draft DP 2034 will be tabled in the civic house today for a final nod. The house of corporators is required to send the draft DP 2034 to the state government latest by July 18 this month. "The draft DP discussion is starting today and our party chief Uddhav Thackeray has instructed us that no kind of reservations change pertaining to open spaces like recreational ground or playground should be allowed to be done," Mahadeshwar said.

He also said that their opposition to the metro car shed in Aarey colony would continue to remain as before. "In the civic improvements committee, we have already raised our opposition to the car shed in Aarey and our position is same now, " said Mahadeshwar.
