Special Correspondent

The 9.33-km stretch of the Outer Ring Road (ORR), connecting Bannur Road to Nanjangud Road, may finally be ready by next year. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched the work at Bannur Road junction here on Wednesday.

Though the total length of the ORR is 41.5 km, a stretch of 32.2 km was developed and the remaining stretch was left incomplete. MUDA had initially planned to take up the work on the 9.33-km stretch after upgrading the remaining stretch into six lanes.

Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA), which developed the ORR to ease traffic congestion inside the city and provide better connectivity to residential localities on the outskirts, is taking up the work at a cost of Rs. 54.09 crore. The majority of the funding has come from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

GHMC to take over roads and buildings roads in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Commissioner (GHMC) commissioner Somesh Kumar on Tuesday said the government will soon issue a GO for handing over roads & buildings (R&B) roads to the corporation by duly creating a separate division. The commissioner stated this at a review meeting held with senior GHMC officials.

Speaking on the occasion, the commissioner said, "With the proposal of merging the R&B roads in GHMC, we can avoid blame from public on maintenance roads." He further asked officials of various departments to work and travel as a team and prepare a holistic plan to develop a road length while addressing various issues such as sanitation, footpaths, patch works and greenery.

The commissioner assured that the GHMC was ready to provide all support and asked officials to come up with proposals for holistic development of 40 kilometre road in each circle within 10 days. He said that the GHMC was planning to make specific changes in road maintenance policy by calling tenders. "The GHMC can give stretch-wise contract for newer roads and for older one, we should give quantity-wise contract," he added.

The commissioner, who observed the condition of roads, said that time was short and in a span of two to three months the GHMC has to take up repairing works on a war-footing basis as the elections code comes into force.

GO soon on transfer of R and B roads to GHMC

The state Government will soon issue an order for handing over R&B roads in the city to GHMC and creating a separate division for it, municipal commissioner Somesh Kumar has said.

The move is to protect the GHMC from public blame though most of the roads are being poorly maintained by the R&B department. He asked officials to prepare plans to develop a road length while addressing sanitation, debris removal, construction of table drains, camber correction, footpaths, patch works, greenery, etc.

He called for proposals for development of 40 km roads in each circle in 10 days. He said GHMC plans to make specific changes in road maintenance policy by calling tenders for contract of annual maintenance of roads after completion of defect liability period of the contractor. Such a system is existing in New Delhi and yielding good results.

The commissioner asked zonal commissioners to hold a review meeting with superintending engineers once in a week, personally monitor the works, fix up the responsibility and complete the works in a stipulated time. The commissioner will be reviewing with the zonal commissioners and SEs twice in a month.

He observed that most of the roads were not laid to the proper level where sweeping machines are unable to cover because of the uneven levels. Engineering officials must come up with plans to level the roads, he said.
