Aurangabad Municipal Corporation receives Rs 8.52 crore for city roads

AURANGABAD: The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), which has recently received a sum of Rs 8.52 crore on account of 1% cess on sale and purchase of properties within the city limits in 2012-13, on Friday said that it would utilise the fund for development of roads.

Municipal commissioner Harshdeep Kamble said that the civic body had already earmarked a fund of Rs 30 crore for the development of 18 selected roads. "The amount (Rs 8.52 crore), which has recently been received, will be used under the road development fund," he said.

Kamble also said that the civic body would declare a final list of selected roads on December 3. "We will soon initiate the process of road construction and also call tenders for the same," he said.

Kamble said that if possible the municipal body would also use new technology called 'white topping' for the construction. The technology is quite common in cities like Mumbai and Pune where roads do not develop potholes for more than 15 years after construction.

Four major stretches to be widened in Old Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Providing relief to motorists, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to take up road widening of four key stretches in the Old City after finishes acquiring properties for the work.

Four stretches where the civic body expects to start demolition within a month, include DRDL junction-Chandrayangutta flyover, Chandrayangutta to Barkas Peeli Durgah, Zohrabi Durgah to Habeebnagar (2 km) and Yakatpura to Rein Bazaar Chamman.

A total of 498 properties will be affected, officials said as the process of offering compensation at government fixed rates to property owners began a few days ago.

On the Chandrayangutta-Barkas stretch, 111 of the 135 properties have been acquired, while about 40 of the 56 properties on the DRDL stretch have received compensation. But property acquisition on other stretches is yet to pick up pace.

Officials said that demolition works will be grounded in two weeks. "The disbursal of land and structure value cheques is going on. We expect to acquire the properties within two weeks following which estimates will be drawn up for road-widening work," a south zone official said.

Officials say that property acquisition on Zohrabi Durgah stretch where there are maximum number of buildings, could present some difficulty. The GHMC hopes to acquire close to 300 properties on this stretch and widen the existing 30 feet road to 60 feet at some places and 80 feet at other locations.

Road widening works in Old City have been contentious and marked by staunch public opposition. To push forth with long-pending proposals, GHMC constituted a special road-widening team headed by an assistant city planner.

Meanwhile, close to 1,600 properties are set for acquisition for metro rail work by the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited between MGBS and Falaknuma, which constitutes the corridor II of the project.

Two roads to be constructed using new technology

AURANGABAD: The AMC on Thursday said it would construct the road from Lemon Tree hotel to Jalgaon T Point that is 2.5 km long with a new technology called 'white topping'.

Sena group leader in the AMC Sushil Khedkar on Thursday said the civic body is introducing the technology for the first time in the city. "A proposal worth Rs 3 crore for the construction of the road was already approved by the general body about six or seven months back. But the proposal was for a simple tar road. Now, however, we have decided to develop it in this new way. The civic body will put in additional costs to improve the quality of the road," he said.

Executive engineer in the civic body Silkander Ali said road built using the white topping technology were more durable as compared to the others. "White topping technology is quite common in cities like Mumbai and Pune. Roads do not develop potholes for more than 15 years after construction," he said.

In addition to this, Ali said the civic body would construct the 1.8 km road stretch between Central Naka and Jalgaon road via SBH and N5 water tank using the same new technology. "The corporation will use Rs 30 crore .The job will be completed in the current financial year," he said.
