Implement cow slaughter ban, Government urged

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Akhila Karnataka Pranidaya Sangha has urged the State Government to declare Karnataka “a State free of cow and its progeny slaughter”.

It demanded setting up of Karnataka Cow and its Progeny Protection Commission for strict implementation of the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964.

Addressing presspersons on Tuesday, the coordinator of the sangha, Dayananda Swamiji, said that statistics showed that slaughter of cows, oxen, and he-buffaloes had led to decrease in their population. Apathy in implementation of the law and imposing punishment on violators were the causes. “The government should amend the Act so as to ban the slaughter of the cow and its progeny,” he said.

Welcoming the State Government’s move to impose a complete ban on cow slaughter by amending the Act, He said several States, including Gujarat, had already implemented the total ban.

“This issue is not a cause for communal clashes,” he added.

Garbage woes pile up

Second day of stir by sanitation workers’ union

Unbearable stench: Mounds of garbage spilling over from the uncleared GHMC bins at Yousufguda Check Post on Tuesday.

HYDERABAD: Garbage lifting by the GHMC continued to be affected at least in some parts of the twin cities for the second consecutive day on Tuesday due to the ongoing strike by the sole workers union.

Heaps of garbage which piled up in different areas are posing a threat to the health of residents. Residents claimed that repeated complaints to the authorities had no effect. The stench of decomposing waste was all-pervading in many parts of the old city, including Jahanuma, Chandulal Baradari and Basharatnagar and nobody was able to pass through the road without covering one’s nose.

Union adamant

The situation was similar in Secunderabad and its surrounding areas. However, the union has been adamant about cancellation of the deal with Ramky for taking up the Integrated Solid Waste Management Project. The three-member panel negotiating with the union held talks with the union’s leaders today but in vain.

The union was said to be concerned about handing over the transport as well as garbage collection activities to the agency under the public private partnership project. The committee consisted of Additional Commissioners Sk. Aleem Basha (Health & Sanitation), Ramesh Babu (Finance) and M. Rajeswara Rao (Parks).

MYSORE: The district administration, the Mysore City Corporation and the Department of Health and Family Welfare jointly launched a door-to-door drive on Monday to spread awareness on steps to prevent the spread of chikungunya, malaria and dengue fever. The drive will take place in two phases in the next six days. It will be monitored and documented by the Health Department.

In addition to surveying the sanitation standards in the localities, each team will visit at least 200 households in each locality and distribute pamphlets.

Blood samples

The teams have been asked to take blood samples from persons with symptoms of these diseases and also distribute medicines.
