Contractor sends garbage vans late, faces 50k fine

NASHIK: The garbage collection contractor of the Panchavati division will be fined Rs 50,000 for the delay in collecting garbage in the division on Sunday.

Garbage vans failed to reach the division and collect garbage till late in the morning. After the Municipal Corporation (NMC) health officer was informed, he went to the division and vans began collecting the garbage after 10am.

About the delay of the garbage vans, a source in the contractor's firm said that the garbage vans were low on diesel and due to unavailability, they procured diesel late in the morning.

Health officer, Sunil Bukane, said, "I have asked the divisional sanitary inspector of Panchavati to take action against the contractor for sending the garbage vans late. Garbage was not lifted in the division till 10am, as garbage vans did not get the diesel on time. All 35 garbage vans in the division did not have diesel. We charge Rs 1,500 for each garbage van for being late."

He said that the contractor is expected to fill fuel in all garbage vans a day earlier, as vans leave for garbage collection early in the morning. But all of a sudden all 35 vans were missing from the Panchavati division on Sunday morning. Noting this, the health officer was informed by his subordinates and the fuel was filled after his intervention.

"The contractors have to fill fuel in the vans one day earlier and they are aware of it. They will have to pay around Rs 50,000 for the delay," Bukane said.

Citizens often complain of various garbage-related issues including that of unattended garbage. The NMC has started an SMS system for citizens to lodge complaints, but these issues are yet to be resolved.

GHMC staffers’ union wants Commissioner removed

Promotions denied and leaves refused, they allege

Simmering differences between the staff and Commissioner of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) came to fore with a section of employees resorting to non-cooperation and demanding the former’s transfer here on Wednesday.

Employees mistreated

The Bhagyanagar Municipal GHMC Employees Union has on Tuesday urged Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan to immediately transfer Commissioner Somesh Kumar, alleging that the employees were being mistreated and demoralised by his threats of suspension.

Charging that promotions were denied and leaves refused, the union in a representation said they would continue agitation if a decision on transfer was not taken.

“Most employees from the head office and circle offices have joined the non-cooperation and we will intensify the agitation,” an office-bearer of the union said on Wednesday.

Black flags

A decision was taken to ply all transport unit vehicles with black flags on Thursday.

However, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation officials said they were discussing issues with the staff and hoped the situation would be resolved amicably.

Commissioner speak

Mr. Somesh Kumar on Tuesday said he was ready to solve the issues and problems of the employees pertaining to promotions and other demands.

He urged them bring forth their grievances to him so that they could be attended to immediately.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) was striving hard to make Hyderabad a world-class city for which various innovative methods to improve revenue collection were being taken up.

All employees needed to cooperate to achieve the targets, he said. The civic body was coming up 71 foot-overbridges in various locations of the city.

Tenders have been called and tree plantation in 10,000 acres of land taken up for a pollution-free environment, he added.

The BBMP is committed to ensuring that garbage is not sent to Mandur from December 1.

Around 15,000 bulk generators, including hotels, apartments and business establishments who have failed to process the waste they generate, have been identified and the BBMP has issued notices to them, stated Mayor N. Shanthakumari.

With the deadline to stop dumping garbage at Mandur landfills drawing close, she urged citizens to segregate waste at source. After chairing a meeting with senior BBMP officials on Thursday, she told reporters that zonal commissioners had been directed to ensure that garbage is segregated in all wards and that is not mixed by contractors.

The BBMP is gearing up to float tenders for 98 wards. The Chief Minister had directed the BBMP to float ward-wise tenders. “If we start the tender process now, it may take around four months to be finalised,” she said.

New units

The BBMP is committed to ensuring that garbage is not sent to Mandur from December 1. Already, the quantum of waste has reduced from 1,600 tonnes per day to around 650 tonnes. Garbage is now being sent to KCDC in Kudlu, Bingipura and Doddaballapura. New waste processing units at Doddaballapura, Lingadeeranahalli, Doddabidarakallu, Seegehalli, Subbarayanapalya and Kannahalli would be ready in two months.
