Civic body to measure human devpt index of city

NASHIK: The civic body is planning to measure the city's Human Development Index (HDI), which it hopes will help gather social and economic details of the people.

As part of this, the NMC has written to Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration, (Yashada) Pune and All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG), Mumbai.

A senior NMC official said, "We are planning to measure the HDI of the city on the lines of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. This will help us get various information about the economic and social status about the city's people. We have written letters to Yashada Pune and AIILSG, Mumbai for the HDI work and urged them to provide us with details on how they would measure the HDI and its criteria."

He added, "Generally, the HDI survey is based on some basic indicators of human development such as life expectancy, literacy rate, mortality rate of infants and age."

The official also said the civic body would start the process once it received the replies from the institutes. "The information we get will help us make better economic and financial planning. We will finalise one of the institutes to conduct HDI survey of all 122 prabhags of the city. The NMC would be the second municipal corporation after the BMC to take up such initiative. The proposal would be presented at the general body immediately after the assembly elections ."

Currently, the population in the municipal corporation's limits is close to 18 lakh. The state government has changed the status of the municipal corporation from 'C' to 'B' on the basis of the population of the city and the per capita income over Rs 5,000. The budget of the NMC has reached Rs 3,000 crore.
