Mettupalayam Municipality seeks sewage treatment plant

To prevent waste water from polluting River Bhavani

Mettupalayam Municipal Chairman D. Satheesh Kumar has written to the Chief Minister seeking a sewage treatment plant facility at Mettupalayam to prevent waste water of the municipality from polluting River Bhavani.

In a memorandum, Mr.Satheesh Kumar said that the municipality had 33 wards and a population of 70,000. A total of 8.29 million litres a day of water was being provided to the residents. After consumption, closer to 70 per cent of the waste water was being let into River Bhavani.

Waste water discharged at various points was actually turning the colour of the water to black especially near the barrage of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation at Oomapalayam.

Various water supply schemes are dependent on River Bhavani as a source with intake at Chikkadasampalayam, Sirumugai, Jadayampalayam, Palladam and Sulur.

Under such circumstances, it would be inappropriate to source the polluted water from the Bhavani and supply it to people, irrespective of the treatment levels.

Financial situation

Considering the financial situation of the local body with the little revenue and mounting expenses, it would be impossible for it to put in place a sewage treatment facility that would cost several crores.

Appeal to CM

Hence, Mr.Satheesh Kumar appealed to the Chief Minister to consider sanction of funds for construction of a sewage treatment plant under any of the State or Central Schemes including the National River Conservation Plan.
